Isaiah's Prophecies: Past, Present & Future

Isaiah’s Prophecies: Past, Present & Future

By: Crickettt

The book of Isaiah is the only book in the Old Testament that says so much about the redemptive work of the Messiah, Jesus Christ and His ministry.

Isaiah, a known prophet in his days, was given prophetic visions about Jesus long before He was ever born and walked upon the earth with man. He spoke about His birth (7:14; 9:6), His ministry (9:7; 42:1-25; 43:10-13,18-19; 55:1-13; 61:1-3), His Great Judgment upon the earth(24:1-6; 34:1-17; 44:6-8) and His return which is His Second Coming(35:1-10; 60:1-22). During this time, He will reign 1,000 years on earth as King of kings and Lord of lords.

Isaiah was given a vision by the Holy Spirit of God, regarding the present and future events for Israel and the world. His prophetic glimpse into the future and writings, would spark many problematic issues with the temple priests and others. He saw what would take place all over the world prior to the return of Jesus Christ the Son of God and after His second coming (Isaiah 40:10-11).

Chapter 42 of Isaiah describes Jesus as a servant of mankind. Given as a gift to man, according to Matthew 12:18-21(NASB 1995) [18] “Behold, My Servant whom I have chosen; My Beloved in whom My soul is well-pleased; I will put My Spirit upon Him, And He shall proclaim justice to the Gentiles. [19] He will not quarrel, nor cry out; Nor will anyone hear His voice in the streets. [20] A battered reed He will not break off, And a smoldering wick He will not put out, Until He leads justice to victory. [21] And in His name the Gentiles will hope.”

Isaiah 9:6-7 [6] For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. [7] There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness from then on and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will accomplish this.

The Book of Isaiah gives such a clear description of who God (Yahweh) is and His desire for all to come know Him and His love. God states in chapter 55, His desire is for those who do not believe or know Him, to come and seek Him while He can still be found before it’s too late. For on that day, He will come down and His wrath will be poured out upon all the living that remains on the earth after the “Catching Away” or Rapture of every true follower and believer in Christ Jesus. They are the ones who have believed that Jesus Christ came into this world in the flesh of a man to bring salvation to a world lost and dying in their sins. He was beaten beyond recognition as a man, crucified on a cross for the sins of the world, buried and raised up to life on the third day and is alive, sitting at the right hand of the Father in heaven. These Christians have also repented of all their sins before Him and received Jesus as Lord and Savior into their hearts and lives and will spend eternity with Him in heaven. The Book of Revelation, or the revealing of Christ, is God’s final plan put into motion. The church (body of Christ) appears to be raptured according the verse in chapter 4:1 because the church is not mentioned again after that verse until chapter 19:11 when Jesus’ comes back for His 2nd return to earth with the church (body of Christ) to reign 1,000 years.

Let’s take a look at different chapters and verses in the book of Isaiah and what God declared about Himself and prophecies given about His Son Jesus.

*These verses reveal what God says about sin and the need for salvation.

Isaiah 1:16-20 NASB1995 [16] “Wash yourselves, make yourselves clean; Remove the evil of your deeds from My sight. Cease to do evil, [17] Learn to do good; Seek justice, Reprove the ruthless, Defend the orphan, Plead for the widow. [18] “Come now, and let us reason together,” Says the Lord, “Though your sins are as scarlet, They will be as white as snow; Though they are red like crimson, They will be like wool. [19] If you consent and obey, You will eat the best of the land; [20] But if you refuse and rebel, You will be devoured by the sword.” Truly, the mouth of the Lord has spoken.

Isaiah 5:20-21 [20] Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; Who substitute darkness for light and light for darkness; Who substitute bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter! [21] Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes And clever in their own sight!

*This is the prophecy of Jesus coming from the line of Jesse and his son who became King David. This was fulfilled just as Isaiah prophesized with Jesus’ birth in Matthew 1:18-25,2:1-23 and in Luke 1:26-80, 2:1-52

Isaiah 11:1-5 [1] Then a shoot will spring from the stem of Jesse, And a branch from his roots will bear fruit. [2] The Spirit of the Lord will rest on Him, The spirit of wisdom and understanding, The spirit of counsel and strength, The spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord. [3] And He will delight in the fear of the Lord, And He will not judge by what His eyes see, Nor make a decision by what His ears hear; [4] But with righteousness He will judge the poor, And decide with fairness for the afflicted of the earth; And He will strike the earth with the rod of His mouth, And with the breath of His lips He will slay the wicked. [5] Also righteousness will be the belt about His loins, And faithfulness the belt about His waist.

*Prophecy regarding the Rapture of the Church which will take place.

Isaiah 26: 19-21 [19] Your dead will live; Their corpses will rise. You who lie in the dust, awake and shout for joy, For your dew is as the dew of the dawn, And the earth will give birth to the departed spirits. [20] Come, my people, enter into your rooms And close your doors behind you; Hide for a little while Until indignation runs its course. [21] For behold, the Lord is about to come out from His place To punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity; And the earth will reveal her bloodshed And will no longer cover her sin. Revelation 4:1-Revelation 4:1 [1] After these things I looked, and behold, a door standing open in heaven, and the first voice which I had heard, like the sound of a trumpet speaking with me, said, “Come up here, and I will show you what must take place after these things.”

*Who God is

Isaiah 40:21-22; 25-26; 28-29,31

[21] Do you not know? Have you not heard? Has it not been declared to you from the beginning? Have you not understood from the foundations of the earth? [22] It is He who sits above the circle of the earth, And its inhabitants are like grasshoppers, Who stretches out the heavens like a curtain And spreads them out like a tent to dwell in. [25] “To whom then will you liken Me That I would be his equal?” says the Holy One. [26] Lift up your eyes on high And see who has created these stars, The One who leads forth their host by number, He calls them all by name; Because of the greatness of His might and the strength of His power, Not one of them is missing. [28] Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth Does not become weary or tired. His understanding is inscrutable. [29] He gives strength to the weary, And to him who lacks might He increases power. [31] Yet those who wait for the Lord Will gain new strength; They will mount up with wings like eagles, They will run and not get tired, They will walk and not become weary.

Isaiah 42: 5-9 [5] Thus says God the Lord, Who created the heavens and stretched them out, Who spread out the earth and its offspring, Who gives breath to the people on it And spirit to those who walk in it, [6] “I am the Lord, I have called You in righteousness, I will also hold You by the hand and watch over You, And I will appoint You as a covenant to the people, As a light to the nations, [7] To open blind eyes, To bring out prisoners from the dungeon And those who dwell in darkness from the prison. [8] I am the Lord, that is My name; I will not give My glory to another, Nor My praise to graven images. [9] Behold, the former things have come to pass, Now I declare new things; Before they spring forth I proclaim them to you.”

Isaiah 43:11-12,18-19 NASB1995 [11] I, even I, am the Lord, And there is no savior besides Me. [12] It is I who have declared and saved and proclaimed, And there was no strange god among you; So you are My witnesses,” declares the Lord, “And I am God. [18] “Do not call to mind the former things, Or ponder things of the past. [19] Behold, I will do something new, Now it will spring forth; Will you not be aware of it? I will even make a roadway in the wilderness, Rivers in the desert.

Isaiah 45:6-7,18, 23-25 [6] That men may know from the rising to the setting of the sun That there is no one besides Me. I am the Lord, and there is no other, [7] The One forming light and creating darkness, Causing well-being and creating calamity; I am the Lord who does all these. [18] For thus says the Lord, who created the heavens (He is the God who formed the earth and made it, He established it and did not create it a waste place, but formed it to be inhabited), “I am the Lord, and there is none else. [23] I have sworn by Myself, The word has gone forth from My mouth in righteousness And will not turn back, That to Me every knee will bow, every tongue will swear allegiance. [24] They will say of Me, ‘Only in the Lord are righteousness and strength.’ Men will come to Him, And all who were angry at Him will be put to shame. [25] In the Lord all the offspring of Israel Will be justified and will glory.”

Isaiah 46:8-11 [8] “Remember this, and be assured; Recall it to mind, you transgressors. [9] Remember the former things long past, For I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is no one like Me, [10] Declaring the end from the beginning, And from ancient times things which have not been done, Saying, ‘My purpose will be established, And I will accomplish all My good pleasure’; [11] Calling a bird of prey from the east, The man of My purpose from a far country. Truly I have spoken; truly I will bring it to pass. I have planned it, surely I will do it.

Isaiah 48:3 [3] I declared the former things long ago And they went forth from My mouth, and I proclaimed them. Suddenly I acted, and they came to pass.

*A promise for those who love God and serve Him as Lord and Savior.

Isaiah 54:13-17 [13] All your sons will be taught of the Lord; And the well-being of your sons will be great. [14] In righteousness you will be established; You will be far from oppression, for you will not fear; And from terror, for it will not come near you. [15] If anyone fiercely assails you it will not be from Me. Whoever assails you will fall because of you. [16] Behold, I Myself have created the smith who blows the fire of coals And brings out a weapon for its work; And I have created the destroyer to ruin. [17] No weapon that is formed against you will prosper; And every tongue that accuses you in judgment you will condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, And their vindication is from Me,” declares the Lord.

*The Lord’s Word is alive and active, sharper than any two edge sword. As a child of God, when you put your faith and trust in Him and speak His word out, He has promised that His Word will not return to Him void.

Isaiah 55:6-9, 11

[6] Seek the Lord while He may be found; Call upon Him while He is near. [7] Let the wicked forsake his way And the unrighteous man his thoughts; And let him return to the Lord, And He will have compassion on him, And to our God, For He will abundantly pardon. [8] “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,” declares the Lord. [9] “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways And My thoughts than your thoughts. [11] So will My word be which goes forth from My mouth; It will not return to Me empty, Without accomplishing what I desire, And without succeeding in the matter for which I sent it.

*This prophecy in Isaiah 56:7 …My house will be called a house of prayer for all the peoples”, was fulfilled by Jesus when he entered Jerusalem and chased off the merchants using the holy temple as their market place for selling and cheating others. Jesus spoke this word to them found in Matthew 21:12-13 [12] And Jesus entered the temple and drove out all those who were buying and selling in the temple, and overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who were selling doves. [13] And He *said to them, “It is written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer’; but you are making it a robbers’ den.”

The book of Isaiah in the Bible is filled with fascinating prophecies both fulfilled and unfulfilled. God used the prophet Isaiah to shine a light on His truth and plans that already have come to pass and those that will happen in the future according to His Word. When comparing the Old Testament against the New Testament, God has revealed Himself throughout scripture in such a way that man cannot ignore the truth about who He is and that He is in control of everything….past, present and future.

*If you have never asked Jesus to come into your heart and be the Lord over your life, I urge you today… Do not wait! We do not know what the day holds or if we even have a tomorrow to wake up to. Don’t let this day pass you by without repenting of all your sins and asking Him to come into your life and make you a new person. He promises to forgive you and give you a new life guided by His perfect love for you. Jesus alone can set you free and give you an eternity with Him in heaven.

*The scriptures above are from the NASB 1995 version.
